Title: The Quarterly Grind (September 2007)
Date: Sep 1, 2007

STAR Academy - The first Correctional Facility to take advantage of
CHALLENGER® Thermal Combustion Systems

In March 2007, the South Dakota Department of Corrections awarded its “Biomass Boiler System” Project to Advanced Recycling Equipment, Inc., and its CHALLENGER® Thermal Biomass Combustion Systems.

This system will be located at the State Treatment and Rehabilitation (STAR)  Academy in Custer, SD , and provide steam to the facility for its heating terminals, air handlers, domestic hot water, laundry services and kitchen equipment.

Fuel for the system will consist of whole tree chips, taken from slash piles, that would have otherwise been treated as forest waste, as well as mill-quality chips.

The STAR Academy System includes a CHALLENGER® Model CCUE610-S “Steam” Thermal Combustion System with Air-Operated Soot Blowers, along with CHALLENGER®’s trademark Auto De-Ash, Extended Combustion, and PCC Controls. The system will also operate a 300 cubic yard Liver Auger Bottom Storage System, Shaker/Overs Screener, Self-Dumping Over Hopper, Economizer, and Combustion Air Pre-Heater.

Delivery is scheduled for October 2007 with installation to follow in November/December.

Akron Ag to install both CHALLENGER® Combustion System and Grinder

Akron Agricultural Products, located in Akron, NY , will soon be installing both a CHALLENGER® Thermal Combustion System and CHALLENGER® Grinder.
The Thermal Combustion System is a CHALLENGER® “Hot Air” Model CCUE412-A (12 MMBTU).

The Grinder is a CHALLENGER® “Hopper” Model CG100-5075-SR-D-T.
Akron Ag’s Grinder and Combustion System will work hand-in-hand to provide “Hot Air” to their paper sludge dryer, with the Grinder processing ground doors and pallets from local manufacturing facilities into the fuel for the Thermal Combustion System.
Delivery is scheduled for October 2007.

Another School District to join the CHALLENGER® Family

Wyalusing Area School District (Wyalusing, PA) will be the next School District to join the CHALLENGER® Family.

This system will operate within the Junior/Senior High School Campus, providing “Hot Water” Heat to its facilities. Whole tree chips, mill-quality chips, and pallet scrap will act as the fuel source.

The Wyalusing System will consist of a CHALLENGER® CCUE412-W “Hot Water” Thermal Combustion System and 300HP “Hot Water” Boiler with 10MM BTU Output. In addition to its Air-Operated Soot Blowers, Auto De-Ash, and Extended Combustion, the system features a 200 cubic yard Liver Auger Bottom Storage and Shaker/Over Screener.

Installation of the system is scheduled for Spring 2008.

Unique Grinder Application

A local manufacturer of large diameter UHP Graphite Electrodes used in the Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) Steel Making Process, recently installed a CHALLENGER® CG400-3055-SR-T “Hopper Style” Grinder at its facility in Pennsylvania.

This grinder application is unique because of the material processed—Pitch.

Pitch is a high grade material, shipped from Europe . As it is being shipped overseas, because of the temperatures in the hull of the ships, it fuses together. The material arrives at the facility in very dense “Super Sacs.”

Upon arrival, these “Super Sacs” are dumped into the CHALLENGER® Grinder and processed down to a manageable size for their electrode-manufacturing process.

The Grinder is positioned atop a large scale that weighs the material as it is discharged from the Grinder. Once they have accumulated the desired weight for each batch, the grinding system is automatically shut-down, and the material is used as an ingredient in the manufacturing process.

By installing this Grinder, the company can now better regulate the amount of Pitch used in each batch, which allows for more accuracy and cost effectiveness.
