APPLICATION:
 
This CHALLENGER® CCU402-W "Hot Water" Thermal Combustion System provides heat to a 30,000 sq. ft. greenhouse facility.
  
The system is equipped with Auto De-Ash and Standard Controls. Also included in the system is a Hot Water Heat Exchanger and 20 cubic yard Live Auger Bottom Storage.
  
CHALLENGER®'s advanced Auto De-Ash System eliminates downtime and labor costs by removing ash from the system automatically. Its hands-free operation also makes its much safer.
 
The Standard Control System is complete with LCD Display that shows the status of the combustion system. Changes to the unit can be easily made manually simply by touching the keypad. The system will also operate at one of four predetermined firing rates (Pilot, Low, Medium or High). The firing rate is determined by constantly monitoring the difference between the current and target temperatures. The control system determines the required firing rate and sets the air flow and fuel feed rates to accommodate the load. A Pager/Remote Access System can be included in this control package. The fuel feed system is complete with a variable frequency drive for an accurate feed rate to ensure complete combustion and a consistent output temperature.
 
The Heat Exchanger provides hot water to a storage tank. The water is then distributed to the greenhouse as needed. The unit is a 3-pass hot gas to water Heat Exchanger with vertical tubes. It sits directly on top of the primary combustion unit. CHALLENGER® Heat Exchangers are designed with vertical tubes because ash is much less likely to settle in a vertical tube than a horizontal tube, which reduces downtime for cleaning the boiler tubes.
 
The combustion unit itself, like all CHALLENGER® Combustion Units, is equipped with high temperature cast refractory ceramic lining for longer life. This cast refractory/ceramic lining was designed to be completely modular, which makes for easy repair and replacement.
 
FUEL SOURCE:
 
This CHALLENGER® Thermal Combustion System burns whole tree chips from a local landscaping operation. The chips are typically 40-50% moisture content.
  
SAVINGS:
 
This particular greenhouse operation has whole tree chips delivered at no cost. The installation of this CHALLENGER® Thermal Combustion System has allowed the customer to completely eliminate its costly heating bills.
